Labor Day weekend has a way of feeling like summer's last big exhale. One final round of parades, cookouts, and lazy Saturday mornings before the season turns toward school buses and cooler evenings. Before you fill in the calendar, it is worth pausing on why we mark this day in the first place.

Why we celebrate Labor Day

Labor Day traces back to the late 1800s, when American workers were putting in long hours, often in difficult conditions, as the country industrialized. On September 5, 1882, thousands of workers marched through the streets of New York City in what is considered the first Labor Day parade, organized to honor the contributions of the American labor movement. The idea spread quickly to cities and states across the country, and in 1894, Congress made it official, establishing the first Monday in September as a national holiday recognizing the social and economic achievements of American workers.

More than a century later, the spirit of the day has not changed much. It is still a day to appreciate the people who build, teach, care for, and keep our communities running, and to enjoy a well earned long weekend with the people you love. Lake County, Indiana

If you live in or near our new site for Copperstone in Winfield, Greenview or The Willows in Crown Point, Streamside in St. John, or Parkside in Dyer, Lake County has a few long-standing traditions worth building your weekend around.

The Lowell Labor Day Festival runs September 4 through 7 and is known as the longest running Labor Day parade in the state. The weekend opens with a Saturday morning 5K, fills with live music and vendors, and wraps up with the parade itself on Monday morning at 10 a.m.

Closer to home, the Crown Point Farmers Market at Bulldog Park runs Saturdays through September 26, so Labor Day weekend is a good excuse to spend Saturday morning browsing more than 70 local farmers and artisans before the holiday gets underway.

Porter County, Indiana

For neighbors near Westwind or Midwood Terrace in Valparaiso, or Rivertrace in Portage, downtown Valparaiso keeps the weekend easy and local. Journeyman Distillery hosts a free, all ages Summer Music Live show on September 2, and the Edge of Liberty Craft Fair sets up downtown on September 6 with local makers and vendors.

If you want to stretch the celebration a little further, mark your calendar for September 12, when the Valparaiso Popcorn Festival takes over downtown with food, crafts, and a nod to the town's popcorn heritage. It falls just after Labor Day, but it is worth planning around if you want one more weekend of small-town festival energy.

Indianapolis & surrounding communities

For families near Fairview West or Talon Woods in Brownsburg, Bomar Estates in Plainfield, Atwater or Lindley Run in Westfield, Grant's Corner in Cumberland, or Evergreen Estates in Greenfield, Labor Day weekend brings some of the biggest events of the year.

North Salem Old Fashion Days fills Hendricks County with the longest parade in the county on September 5, along with truck and tractor pulls, car shows, and the weekend's famously silly bed races. Just down the road, Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park hosts the NHRA U.S. Nationals on September 5, one of the biggest weekends in drag racing.

In Greenfield, Tuttle Orchards opens the farm for Labor Day Fun at the Farm on September 5 and 7, with apple picking, a corn maze, and a wagon ride that is easy to turn into a full family morning.

And if your Labor Day plans lean toward live music, Hamilton County has you covered with the Fishers Blues Fest on September 5 and 6, plus a run of Symphony on the Prairie tribute concerts at Conner Prairie throughout the weekend.
